What is workers’ compensation?
Workers' compensation provides medical and wage benefits to people who are injured at work. The coverage is mandated by each state and the wage and medical benefits vary by state. Workers’ compensation provides medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs to employees who are injured or become ill “in the course and scope” of their job. It also pays death benefits to families of employees who are killed on the job.
What is short-term disability?
Unlike worker's compensation that provides relief to injured workers on the job, a short-term disability is a purchasable private insurance policy, covering all illnesses and injuries that occur outside of work. In Georgia, you need to either purchase the relevant insurance package from an insurance company or utilize your employer’s pre-existing coverage. DO NOT allow an Employer to convince you to apply your work-related injury to short-term disability rather than filing a workers’ compensation claim. MOST Employers use this tactic to allow the statute of limitations to run on your worker’s compensation claim; and, more often than not, simply terminate injured employee’s once the statute of limitations has ended for their workers’ compensation claim
